The EXCEL program gave college students an opportunity to chaperone and mentor high school students on their journey through the WSU Pullman campus this weekend.

EXCEL Camp Counselors Frazier Myer (with WSU hat on) and Cherrise Reyes (giving thumbs up) help their EXCEL participants find the new Elson S. Floyd Multicultural Events Center being constructed on campus.

Washington State University College students helped the next generations by sharing their experiences as students at WSU. Frazier Myer (from the Chehalis tribe) said that he came to WSU because he heard the Communication program was the best. It sure did work out for him because his major is communication.

Elsie Cree chose WSU because it’s close to mom, dad and other close family members. Both Frazier and Elsie’s responses to the hardest part of becoming a college student were similar. For Frazier, it was adjusting to everything once he got here.

And for Elsie, it was transitioning from a small to big town. She said at first she wasn’t “used to it.”

If you ever thought of coming to WSU Elsie would say that WSU has the best Native American programs and they make you feel very welcomed. Frazier thinks the Native American Center becomes your home away from home.
