Language Matters: How to Talk About Native Nations

about Native people and Tribal Nations?

• Are you aware that WSU has an Executive Policy (EP41) on Tribal engagement,
consultation, and consent?

Please join the Native Governance Center for an interactive 60 minute presentation
on terminology basics. This is part one of a two-part series on talking about Native
people and Tribal Nations. This Native-led organization is passionate about bringing
accessible, educational content related to sovereignty, nation rebuilding, and Indian
Country. Their programs for the broader community aim to increase respect for Tribal
sovereignty and better health, educational, and economic outcomes for Native peoples.
In addition to covering what’s acceptable, the first of two sessions will showcase the
wide range of opinions on language and terminology within Indian Country. In addition,
attendees will participate in breakout sessions and a live Q&A with the presenters. You’ll
learn about topics such as:

• Native nations that share geography with Washington State
• Native American vs. Indigenous vs. American Indian vs. Alaska Native
• Differentiating between reservations, casinos, and Native nations
• Respectfully referring to individual Native people and groups of Native people

The event is relevant for all administration, faculty, staff and students—for those with
limited to extensive knowledge about Native peoples and Tribal Nations. Come with
your questions!

This collaboration is funded by the Institute for Research and Education to Advance
Community Health and developed in partnership with the Office of Tribal Relations at
Washington State University and the Native Governance Center.
